The Howard School, founded in 1865 as a beacon of hope and opportunity for Chattanooga’s Black community, has experienced significant decline in its facilities, particularly its auditorium. While Howard has a rich history of producing exceptional graduates and hosting influential figures, the school now serves over 1,700 students from predominantly economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with 90% of families living below the poverty line. To restore the spirit and pride of The Howard School and enhance the educational and artistic experiences of its students, the school’s historic auditorium will be restored as the Roland M. Carter Arts Centre, an inspirational and state-of-the-art facility for student learning and community engagement.
This four-phase renovation project will transform The Howard School's aging, inadequate auditorium into a state-of-the-art facility for both student learning and community engagement. The revitalized space will serve as a hub for arts education and performances, benefiting both The Howard School and the broader Chattanooga community.
The restoration of the Roland M. Carter Arts Centre is an ambitious undertaking, and we cannot achieve this vision without your generous support. Your contribution to the campaign, no matter the size, will directly invest in the future of Howard students and the cultural vitality of the Chattanooga community.
